Factors Related to The Surface Effect of PCB

In PCB production, customers are more concerned about the craftsmanship, price, and delivery of PCB boards. The surface roughness of the PCB causes the EM wave to take a path with a longer average value, resulting in increased loss. The higher the surface roughness of the conductor, the higher the resistance to skin effects. When the EM wave propagates in a conductor, the skin effect tends to change the current distribution of the EM wave to accumulate more toward the surface of the conductor instead of staying deep inside the conductive material.

When using EM simulators or other commercial CAE tools, designers rely on the traditional Morgan Correlation to overcome the surface roughness of the conductor. PCB manufacturers do this by involving numerical factors used to correct the surface roughness, which depends on the ratio of smooth surface to rough surface. When calculating the loss of a high-frequency microstrip line, the use of Kr can mainly match the measurement result of conductor loss well. However, in some cases the measurement results do not match the computer predictions.

In addition, such deviations between calculated and measured values can be expensive at the design stage, especially because achieving the desired performance requirements can lead to additional design iterations. Avoiding this delay in the design may mean carefully considering the choice of RF PCB to make laminates based on the roughness of its conductor surface
