When the PCB manufacturing operation has a higher volume, the programming fixture can be an effective tool. This process involves the use of spring contacts called pogo pins. These form electrical contacts between the PCBs. They are used to press into the contacts that need to be programmed on the PCB. Then set up the fixture to program the entire panel at the same time. This speeds up production and testing. Fixtures are a more expensive option, and the cost of development and construction is higher. Due to the high cost of such tools, they are usually only used for medium to high production runs.
The final option available is to use generic headers. This can be thought of as something between the programming head and the fixture. Use cables with built-in pogo pins. One end of the cable is connected to the program, and the other end is connected to the PCB contacts. This provides an effective process for small batch PCB production and operation, because it does not require tool-specific heads or building programming fixtures.
